BRIDGET WHELAN writer

for writers and readers….

Hurry, Hurry, Hurry….if you’ve got an unpublished novel needing a home

HarperCollinsGot an 70,000+ word story saved on your desktop? Is it stuffed into a folder gathering dust  underneath your bed? Someone wants to read it – at least the first three chapters – and that  someone is THE BOROUGH PRESS, a new branch of HarperCollins. It’s only a few months old,  but it is already punching above its weight. It launched with with novels by Lionel Shriver and Nathan Filer who went on to win the Costa Book of the Year with his debut The Shock of the Fall.

What do they want? Literary fiction – so not Chick Lit or Fantasy, not Sci Fi either unless your name is Margaret Atwood…(and she would be disqualified on the grounds that she’s been published and has an agent).

How long have you got? Not long.

This open submission window will close at a minute to midnight on the night of Easter Monday 21 April 2014. It is open to  previously unpublished writers in the UK and you have to send a synopsis and an author biography as well as your first chapters. And you also need to have already written your novel – if they like your writing they will call in the rest of the story and you can’t ask them to wait…

To find out more visit Borough Press’ website.

And if you’d like to tweet a link to THIS post, here’s a suggested tweet:

 – send the first 3 chapters of your unpublished novel to major publishers, but hurry!

What a gem you are, for someone out there this could have come just at the right time.

I know! There’s luck in writing and this could just be the piece of luck that someone needs. How about it, Ann? Got a manuscript in a desk drawer?

Nope, settled on being a poet, but my autobiography might be up for grabs soon. Oh and the marionettes from ‘Oh What a Lovely War’ are getting some attention from the Beeb currently, getting them all placed for posterity is also a matter of luck!
