BRIDGET WHELAN writer

for writers and readers….

MONDAY CREATIVE WRITING EXERCISE because it’s a good way to start the week: POETRY

This exercise comes from the poet Julia Darling who felt that often we write too literally, too logically or self-consciously, when some of our best work comes from imaginative leaps of faith.

Write a poem that gives the instructions for something you can’t do .

Here are some examples:

      How To Fly
      How To Speak To Lions
      How To Start A Revolution
How To Make A Wedding Dress
How To Build a Space Ship

The only rule is that you don’t know how to do the thing, so if you are a dressmaker forget the wedding dress.   If none of these appeal choose something emotional like How To Speak To The Dead or How To Fall in Love.
