Alternating the thoughtful task of writing with the mindless work of laundry or dish washing will give you the breaks you need for new ideas and insights to occur. Clean the toilet, what an idea! The mind boggles….no, no, no! A tea light in the bathroom, expensive bubbles, favourite relaxing music…or treat the shower like your personal spa, but then I am an apprentice poet not a brilliant well known writer.
Found a lot of irony in Chuck Palahniuk’s quote too, but I think where hanging out the washing (or yes, even cleaning the toilet) has it over a relaxing soak in the bath with mood music is the very humdrum and routine nature of housework. It’s physical which is a good thing and it’s not something you can engage with at any kind of meaningful level so your mind fills the vacuum. Sometimes with just the idea you’ve been searching for…
