Introducing a Dickensian Christmas

On this day in 1843 Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol. He wrote it in just six weeks. The print run of 6000 sold out by Christmas Eve and it has never been out of print. The novella not only helped the author out of a financial crisis, it almost single-handedly gave us the picture of what a perfect Christmas should be like with turkey and snow and open-hearted charity.
In Simon Callow’s book Dickens’ Christmas, Dickens made it

“…the point of intersection of the whole life of society, where a huge effort of benevolence, of generosity and of integration could be harnessed to heal the running wound at the heart of the world in which he lived.

Dickens was in a tight spot financially because he had overspent on a trip to America so, indirectly, the US can claim to be the inspiration for Scrooge & co.
