BRIDGET WHELAN writer

for writers and readers….

Who is Mrs Finnegan?

New readers start here (also useful for those of a forgetful nature and CASUAL interlopers)

This being a summary of her adventures at THE REGENCY TOWN HOUSE, the highs, the lows and the bits in between

Mrs Finnegan’s career as housekeeper and ADVICE GIVER was first recorded on March 20th 2020, at the start of lockdown in the UK. As it happened, Mrs F was left in sole command of the grand house in Brunswick Square as the rest of household left for the country, fleeing the contagion that was rife in towns and cities.

There were benefits.

...being entirely in charge of the wine cellar means it gets a thorough dusting at least once a day. The BOTTLES also require a good deal of re-arranging….

And dangers.

The weather is warm and THERE are few pleasures greater than WANDERING around an empty house in my chemise. And there are few GREATER disasters than a knock on the front door.

Although Mrs F soon came to love Brighton, she never took to sea bathing.
If the good Lord had wanted us to swim in the Channel he would have made the water warmer and given us FINS.

Master Peregrine, a retired riding master and Brunswick Square neighbour, invited Mrs Finnegan to dinner (a shocking occurrence with he being a gentleman and she a housekeeper). For long weeks she could THINK of little else. And then the day arrived…Read about it HERE

WARNING! Handkerchiefs required. Only AN UTTER brute would refrain from WEEPING

All the time Mrs Finnegan was giving USEFUL advice to the innocent and unwary, the ignorant and inexperienced, the worried unwell and the feckless healthy.

She covered such subjects as
FALSE TEETH,
BEING A SPINSTER ON £200 A YEAR
THE VIRTUES OF COWARDICE
APPROPRIATE PASTIMES FOR LADIES

Her fame spread and the upward trajectory of her career was only slightly deflected by nearly being arrested, a man claiming to be the late Mr Finnegan and a surprising marriage proposal from Master Peregrine.

She is now a lady authoress with Mrs Finnegan’s Guide to Love, Life and Laxatives on display in the most discerning of establishments (and a few others).
