The Literate Scientist Is Alive And Well And Winning Prizes In County Cork

Never let it be said that science and the creative arts don’t mix. A biochemist, a psychologist and a dentist are showing how it can be done.

This year’s Ballymaloe International Poetry Prize has been won by Tom Moore, with his poem ‘The Astronaut’

Tom is a lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry at University College Cork. He wins €5,000 plus two nights B&B and dinner for two at Ballymaloe House, home to the famous cookery school.
The second prize (€1,000) went to Kita Shantiris, a Los Angeles psychologist and head of a mental health centre, while Paula Cunningham a Belfast dentist won the third prize (€500).
