for writers and readers….

F is for FLYTING (ancient and modern)

letter f

Flyting is an abusive slanging match in verse, usually between two poets, usually between two Scottish poets. Although the language was violent, there was also a grudging professional respect.

English: Robert Burns Source: Image:Robert bur...

True flyting was obsolete by the 16th century, but the traditional form didn’t die out and Robbie Burns poem To a Louse is an example

Ye ugly, creepin, blastit wonner
Detested, shunn’d by saunt an’ sinner

I’m no expert but could Gangsta Rap be the 21st century equivalent?

  1. Ha ha! That’s exactly what I was thinking. Rappers and poets have been having word wars for years.
    Great post! 🙂

Thanks – Gangsta Rap in a Scottish accent would be really cool!
