Safari Friday searching the web for writers and readers — website stats for the inner nerd

blue eyeSafari = Swahili for long journey.I am on the look out for anything accessible from a keyboard that educates, entertains, intrigues, raises a smile. Anything that helps a reader get through the day or a writer the next draft. Let me know if you write a website that you’d like featured or discover something that really should be shared.

Be warned – checking your blog or website statistics can get a tad egocentric, like habitually googling your name (unless your bank balance depends on how many people visit your website).
I would also be the first to admit that there are a lot of better things a writer or a reader can do (like write or read), but if you want to find out what is happening behind the scenes of your blog or website AND those belonging to other people check out ALEXA.
There are other web statistics services that provide valuable free information such as google anaylytics and the really rather wonderful Australian Statcounter. They all measure different things in different ways and produce different figures and I don’t know enough about a complex subject to assess which is the most accurate or useful.

I decided to mention Alexa for its fun element and the fact that you can install a toolbar that tells you instantly how popular any website is: for example, the University of Brighton’s website is the 3949th most popular in the UK right this moment and a not-at-all bad 84,832 in the entire world. These figures change all the time. In comparison Oxford University is 713 in the UK and 7001 in the world

This is what Alexa had to say about this blog in March 10 2013

There are 856,874 sites with a better three-month global Alexa traffic rank than Bridgetwhelan.com. (Rub it in why don’t you…that’s nearly a million)  The site’s visitors spend roughly 50 seconds on each pageview and a total of three minutes on the site during each visit.

And today….May 17 2013

There are 603,915 sites with a better three-month global Alexa traffic rank than Bridgetwhelan.com. Visitors to the site spend about thirteen minutes per visit to the site and two minutes per pageview.(Wow! Thank you for hanging around so long – it was the muffins, wasn’t it?)  Bridgetwhelan.com has attained a traffic rank of 16,281 among users in the UK, where about 94% of its audience is located.

Fun, isn’t it?

It’s a bit like looking up at the stars at night and knowing you can only see a very small fraction of them.
It makes you realise just how insignificant you are.
The best thing you can do then is give yourself a shake and concentrate on this world, friends, family and acquaintances otherwise you’d go nuts 🙂
