Self-published Writers Encouraged to Enter Prestigious Competition
The Young Writer of the Year Award has been out of action for six years, but it now being revived under the sponsorship of The Sunday Times and agents Peters Fraser Dunlop (PFD) Past winners include Sarah Waters, Simon Armitage and Zadie Smith.
The Award is worth £5000 to the winner, is free to enter and is open to works of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry published between July 1st 2014 and June 30th 2015. What’s not to like? (Well, for me it could be that you have to be between 18-35 to enter…but that’s just sour grapes.)
PFD are actively looking for self-published talent and are keen to stress that the award is for quality, not popularity. Self-published authors with disappointing sales should enter if they believe in their work.

When you are a ‘young writer’ ( in the writerly sense) and double the age admitted you are being flagged off the course and told it is time to go! But good to know of those up-and-coming ‘quality authors given a shot at recognition.
Sour grapes never made a good dessert, not even with aged Stilton!
You’re right – sour grapes are no good for anyone. This does sound like a good opportunity. Is it a sign of the times that a literary agency wants self published authors to get involved? Are they worried that too many good books are slipping through the net and being missed by tradtional publishers
I would like to attribute such high motives! The cynic whispers that when you are being threatened by blood-thirst lions you throw them a bone or two! But let’s run with your explanation for the moment!
