Writing about the beast within – get your pens out for this unusual competition

rage

The more humanity advances, the more it is degraded
(the always cheerful) Gustave Flaubert

I’m posting news about this writing competition because of the subject you have to tackle – Primitive Humanity. Your task is to write fiction of no more than 3000 words on rage, lust and those other animal instincts that lie beneath the thin veneer of civilisation and culture. See, I knew you’d like it.

I don’t know much about the organisers Cro Magnon. They have a literary website which you can visit HERE and also seem to be involved in writing for the theatre but I don’t know where in the UK they are based or what productions they’ve been involved in. This is their first writing competition – and, to be honest, it feels like it. But everyone starts somewhere and if this theme powers your shower don’t hesitate. The entry fee is £5. The winner will win £100 and be published on The Cro Magnon website and the best of the rest will be published online too.

The deadline  is  30th September 2015.

This is what Cro Magnon is hoping to turn up in their electronic post bag.

The theme for your stories should be the essential nature of Primitive Humanity. We want you to find something eternal which has been present in humans from our primal beginnings to the civilised present whether it is our bestial rage, passionate lust, the complex relationships we strive to maintain or just our love of art. While you need not necessarily be a paleoanthropologist (though if you are congratulations) we want you to think about how humans behave, what makes us do the things we do, and how we have changed in our pursuit of civilisation.
