BRIDGET WHELAN writer

for writers and readers….

She would never be lonely again…QUOTES FOR WRITERS (and people who like quotes)

city rubbishFrom that time on, the world was hers for the reading. She would never be lonely again, never miss the lack of intimate friends. Books became her friends and there was one for every mood. There was poetry for quiet companionship. There was adventure when she tired of quiet hours. There would be love stories when she came into adolescence and when she wanted to feel a closeness to someone she could read a biography. On that day when she first knew she could read, she made a vow to read one book a day as long as she lived.

Betty Smith (said by a character in A Tree Grows Up in Brooklyn, one of my all time favourite books. You are SO lucky if you haven’t read it yet because that pleasure is still to come….

Oh goodness yes, I have read it–more than once (once in high school and once in undergrad school when I took Adolescent Literature). It is probably my favorite coming-of-age stories, and I have read many.

Francie also decided that she would be a writer when she grew up.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn has been one of my favorite novels for more than 40 years. No doubt it influenced my own writing.

    Thanks for posting this excerpt.

You’re right! And didn’t she first write compositions about living the life she dreamed of: a life without want or worry and it was no good. She on;y started to write ‘properly’ when she drew on her own experiences…I love so much about that book: the alcoholic father who was a singer-waiter, the pillow they were given as a wedding present…READ IT if you haven’t already.
