Beware the Yule Cat!
Jólakötturinn, a giant cat with a vicious temper and voracious appetite, stalks Iceland at Christmas. He is searching for those who failed to receive new clothes for the holidays and when he finds them, he eats them whole.
If that seems terribly unfair there is logical explanation for the cat’s behaviour. Icelandic farmers and farm workers who completed their work on time were rewarded with new clothes, while the lazy received nothing and risked becoming the Yule Cat’s next meal.

don’t mess with the giant cat!
Some years ago, my husband saw one of the rural ‘beasts’ – as he’s a sharp-eyed birdwatcher I’m pretty confident that if he says he saw a large black feline shape that could only have been an irresponsibly released panther, he did. Now I’m glad he wasn’t wearing his most raggedy clothes – I never realised how close an escape he had.
