SAFARI FRIDAY searching the web for writers and readers WRITING CALENDAR

Safari = Swahili for long journey.I am on the look out for anything accessible from a keyboard that educates, entertains, intrigues, raises a smile. Anything that helps a reader get through the day or a writer the next draft. Let me know if you write a website that you’d like featured or discover something that really should be shared

Writers and would-be writers and day dreaming writers owe Sally Quilford big time. A prolific writer herself, she contributes a monthly column to Writers Forum magazine and also runs a website that gives writers a reason to get up in the morning and face the cruel blank screen.

She lists writing competitions in order of their closing date. That is a simple idea of blinding brilliance. You could do a lot worse than organise your writing life around Sally’s calendar.

I have no doubt that this website represents a lot of hard work. It’s an act of generosity to fellow writers and she does it because she knows we are all need a deadline. If someone hasn’t given us one we need to manufacture our own…
…I must finish before Christmas, next pay day, the kids’ coming home from school…

OR even better by a competition deadline.

Careers have been forged by writing competitions: by winning of them, of course, (poet and novelist Tobias Hill began his career this way and every rejection, every time he wasn’t short listed, he sent out more on the Hydra principle – every time the serpent’s head was cut off she grew two more.) But even if you never win, the competition gave you a focus and a goal post and the only way to learn how to write is to write.

Thank you so much for the lovely write up, Bridget! The comps calendar is a labour of love and predates my column in Writers Forum by several years. I just remember how hard it was to find out about comps when I was starting out, and some writers kept them firmly to themselves. So I decided to find a way to open them up to everyone. I can only hope I’ve succeeded in doing that.

Thank you! It’s an act of great generosity to share your hard work with the rest of us.
