writing apprenticeshipStart early and work hard. A writer’s apprenticeship usually involves writing a million words (which are then discarded) before he’s almost ready to begin. That takes a while. David Eddings

Exactly! And I like to think that the million words includes all the essays written at school and university, the reports produced for work, the texts sent as well as the half-baked, half-finished novel still sitting in a file on your desktop…

From Bridget Whelan – it made me think – I have been writing since I was a teenager – poetry, short stories, books and I wondered how many million words I have thrown away in 45 years, without a thought. I was always taught to treasure the written word, but obviously I have not been doing that – even those that do not satisfy have some meaning.

Oh, I think you have to discard an awful lot of those million words – my house is awash with paper as it is. Wouldn’t want that cringe worthy short story written as a teenager about zoos taking up space or the letter of complaint to the council circa 1993. I’d drown!
