The problem with writing a book in verse is, to be successful, it has to sound like you knocked it off on a rainy Friday afternoon. It has to sound easy. When you can do it, it helps tremendously because it’s a thing that forces kids to read on. You have this unconsummated feeling if you stop.

    Hi Bridget – thought for a second this meant YOU are writing a book in verse! This made me remember how I used to like reading ‘Where the Wild Things Are’, by American writer & illustrator Maurice Sendak, to my daughter. While it didn’t have super-obvious rhyme, there was just enough to get make it easy to get the stresses in the right place — even on those occasions when the adult reading the bedtime story was more tired than the child!

      Write a book in verse – perish the thought! (I’d read one, but write one, never.) I think Where the Wild Things Are is probably about the best 30-50 words in the English language. Loved reading it to my children when they were young enough to want a wolf suit and as adults they treasure it still.
