It Doesn’t Have to Start with Stealing – AI and Writers

The Society of Authors is calling on the British Government to protect and enforce UK copyright law. It’s not arguing we should turn our back on AI, just that the tech companies involved in developing it should stop stealing.

It re-mixes and rehashes the creative work of musicians, artists and writers without permission and without paying for it. In some ways it is a old fashioned trade union dispute: workers should be paid for the work they do. And for that to happen human creators need to be told how and where their work is being used.

We can’t un-invent AI, but we can make sure it works for us and not against us. And not throwing away our copyright laws seems like an important step in that process.
