WRITING IS LIKE BEING GAY…Quotes for writers (and people who like quotes)

Mark HaddonI don’t remember deciding to become a writer.  You decide to become a dentist or a postman.  For me, writing is like being gay.  You finally admit that this is who you are, you come out and hope that no one runs away.  Mark Haddon

Good. It’s caused a bit of controversy over in my facebook page because of what coming out as gay means in some parts of the world – danger, discrimination and worse, much worse. That’s a valid point but I think Mark Haddon meant writing was an integral part of him – not a choice or a vocation – but the heart beat of his life. However, because it is not immediately apparent to others like the colour of his skin there is a choice about revealing it.
