Make it Up: a week of free creative writing workshops for children run by Little Green Pig

I am very excited to be a small part of Little Green Pig’s creative Pop Up this week. In the centre of Brighton they are running two very special workshops every day.

children writing

Storymaking workshops : from Tuesday 30 August to Saturday 3 September, 10 am – 12 pm. The children will be writing a team story and then finishing it off individually with help from our volunteer story mentors, complete with illustrations by them and an artist. They’ll then go home with their very own book! Suitable to 8 – 12 year olds of all levels, one session available per child.

Illustration workshops: from Tuesday 30 August to Saturday 3 September, 2 – 4 pm. From comic strips to cartoons, get inspiration from professional artists.

Suitable for 7 – 12 year olds of all levels, one session available per child.

They are also hosting local writers and artists-in-residence on site every day at lunchtime. That’s where I come in. I will be in residence for an hour between 12 noon and 1pm on Friday September 2nd at No Walls Gallery (114 Church St, Brighton BN1 1RL) – you can find it on Google Maps. Do pop in to say Hi if you’re nearby.

What will I be doing?

Good question. All I know is that I will be continuing a story started by children in the workshops. So I could be writing about elves or footballers, witches casting spells or dancers snowboarding in space… and the emphasis will be on process, rather than a finished project. The idea is thachildren should enjoy the messy joy of creativity, rather than the stress of deadlines, edits and other horrors.

What is Little Green Pig?
Very good queston. It is a local organisation with an international heart. It was inspired by the American writer Dave Eggers and the writing centre shop for pirates he set up in San Francisco called 826 Valencia . Little Green Pig run after school writing sessions and  since 2012 have been mentoring with London’s Ministry of Stories, co-founded by writer Nick Hornby (of High Fidelity and Fever Pitch fame). They also organise other cool projects like transforming a bus into a writing pet shop, pen a murder mystery alongside the ghosts at Preston Manor , and produce a couple of soap operas…So far, they’ve worked with over 1500 children and young people in Brighton and Hove, trained 200 volunteers and are working with a growing number of professional writers and artists.

The International Connection

Little Green Pig  are now part of an amazing network of writing organisations across the world, from the Labo des Histoires in France to the 100 Story Building in Sydney, Australia. They are planning to open a writing centre and fantastical shop in Brighton SOON!

This looks fun – wish I was a child and lived in Brighton!
