Nobel Prize in Literature will be awarded twice this year

The Nobel Prize in Literature is coming back this autumn AND prizes for both 2018 and 2019 will be awarded. Last year’s award was cancelled following accusations of rape against the husband of a member of the Swedish Academy. It sounds as though everything has been shaken up as a result and the organisation flung into the 21st century.
Regulations have been amended, making it possible for members to resign. It seems bizarre that wasn’t possible before. According to yesterday’s press release “The Academy also no longer includes any members who are subject to conflict of interest or criminal investigations.”
What – that happened before? It seems that a light has been shone into the internal workings of the organisation. It is shame that it took a tragedy to flick the switch.
